KMS on Tour
Here at Kilkenny Musical Society we are proud to be a member of AIMS, the Association of Irish Musical Societies. AIMS is an umbrella group for amateur musical societies in Ireland which provides many services and supports to its members. KMS firmly believe in supporting as many of our fellow AIMS societies as we possibly can and this 2014-2015 has been no exception. In fact, this season has seen us visit more societies than ever before and what an entertaining year we have had.
Our first outing was way back at the very start of the season. Our members were keen to grasp the Sondheim bug so we travelled down the motorway to Waterford and to the David Hennessy M&D Society for a wonderful production of Sondheim’s ‘Into the Woods’. After that it was on to Oyster Lane to see their production of "Jesus Christ Superstar". November saw us head to our first trip west to see Marian Choral Society in Tuam perform ‘Hairspray’. The next two weeks brought three more outings firstly to our friends at Saint Michael’s Theatre MS in New Ross and their production of Evita, to the Helix in Dublin to ESB Madsoc's production of another Sondheim classic, Assassins, directed by Christine Scarry, and a week later we were treated to another Andrew Lloyd Webber classic with Jesus Christ Superstar from Portlaoise MS.
With our own Showstoppers concert in the Watergate and with many of our members taking part in the Watergate panto we knuckled down to a bit of rehearsing for the next few months but it wasn’t long before we were out on the road again. In February we visited Trim MS and were treated to a very fine production of ‘The Addams Family’. Only three short days later we were with our neighbours in Tipperary MS for ‘All Shook Up’.
March and April really is silly season for AIMS shows. They start to come thick and fast and looking ahead at the calendar we were salivating at some of the shows we had ahead of us. At last year’s KMS production of Michael Collins we were so grateful to Carrick-On-Suir MS for bringing such a large busload to support our show and it was no surprise that a large number of our members made the return journey last month to see a super production of ‘Hello Dolly’. Then two days later it was back to New Ross and this time to New Ross MS for Jesus Christ Superstar. Our third outing of that week was our annual pilgrimage to the Tivoli Theatre for Teachers MS and an electric production of ‘All Shook Up’. The following night we swapped Dublin for Galway and Patrician MS with their production of West Side Story. The following week we trundled up the motorway again this time stopping at Naas for ‘Crazy for You’ and a few days later it was Ballinasloe for another ‘Addams Family’. We still haven’t quite recovered from that set drop! We closed out our March adventures with a double trip. With a rare night off from our own rehearsals some of us headed to Galway MS for ‘Anything Goes’ while others visited Thurles MS for ‘Curtains’.
We began our April show visits with a trip to Newbridge MS and a fantastic ‘Sister Act’ and then we came to the exciting realisation that the next show on the AIMS calendar is us! We look forward to welcoming our friends from the AIMS community to the Watergate and hope you enjoy the show. Once the curtain comes down on ‘Sweeney Todd’ you can rest assured that we’ll be out on the road again. Why not join us in supporting the many wonderful shows around the country that are yet to come this season.
