K.M.S. Secretary’s Report 13/14

It has been a very busy and exciting year for KMS!

Following last year’s AGM on May 30th 2013, the new committee held their first meeting on June 4th. Seamus welcomed our new committee members.

Our show for 2014 was selected at our first meeting on June 4th, ‘Michael Collins – A Musical Drama’.
Over the coming weeks, our production team was selected to feature Christine Scarry as director, Patrick Clancy as musical director and Gemma Grant as choreographer. The committee revealed this information to society members on July 5th in Rafter Dempsey’s pub. An information night was held on September 13th in O’Faolain’s. Auditions were held two weeks later.

K.M.S. crowned All Ireland Champions

It would seem that Kilkenny can now boast a new All-Ireland title. At its annual national awards held in Killarney last weekend, the Association of Irish Musical Societies (AIMS), Kilkenny Musical Society were the proud recipient of four awards. These awards were adjudicated against all other societies in the country and represent a phenomenal achievement for this local group of performers.

A.I.M.S. Adjudication - Michael Collins

Well ahead of its opening, the posters for this show said it all by publicly and proudly stating: ‘Michael Collins – Sold Out’. While that quotation may, perhaps, be a political statement for some, in this case, it was a definite confirmation of commercial success … and if ever a production deserved such support, it was this one.

This musical slice of Irish history by the late Bryan Flynn, with its almost sung-through format, was epic in both content and staging and everyone involved here deserves the highest praise for producing one of the most riveting nights of theatre that I have witnessed in a long time.

‘The big fella’ scoops ten nominations for KMS

KMS on Tour

Not content with rehearsing five nights a week, the musical mad gang from KMS have been travelling the south east region & beyond to experience some of the fantastic shows being staged by other musical societies.

At KMS we firmly believe in the importance of inter-society support. As well as a fantastic nights entertainment & social gathering for our members it underlines the spirit of AIMS – supporting one another united in our passion for musical theatre.

Launch night for ‘The Big Fella’

One of the most fateful days in the course of Irish history was remembered last week at the launch of Kilkenny Musical Society’s 2014 production of Michael Collins – A Musical Drama. The armoured car which took Michael Collins on his last tragic journey through Beal na Blath travelled from the Curragh to mark the launch of this exciting event in Kilkenny’s theatre calendar.

The Gathering 2013

The Gathering

As most of you know, 2013 was the year of the Gathering – an event organized to promote Ireland, Irish culture & its people all around the world. One of the ways in which towns & cities were encouraged to become involved was by organizing an event which reconnected Irish people home & abroad. The year of the Gathering was also the 40th birthday of Kilkenny Musical Society and with that in mind the committee decided that it would be an exciting opportunity to reconnect with past society members & showcase our 2013 production of The Pirates of Penzance as an official Gathering event. In recognition of our efforts, members of Kilkenny Musical Society’s committee were invited to attend a reception held in Kilkenny County Hall & were presented with a certificate from President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins
