Rehearsals Begin for Sweeney Todd
Anticipation and excitement was high last Thursday evening when director Christine Scarry unveiled her plans for Kilkenny Musical Society’s 2015 musical “Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” at the society’s first rehearsal of the new year. The society are delighted to welcome back Christine in her second show with the society, after directing last year’s hugely successful award winning production of “Michael Collins – A Musical Drama”.
“Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” is a musical by Stephen Sondheim based on the 1973 play of the same name. The musical was first produced in 1979 on Broadway where it won eight Tony awards including Best Musical and remains one of Sondheim's most beloved pieces.
It tells the tale of London barber, Benjamin Barker. Torn from his family and exiled for 15 years on a miscarriage of justice, Barker returns home to a city as corrupt as when he left. Hell-bent on revenge after learning the agonizing fate of his wife and daughter, he assumes the guise of Sweeney Todd and takes up his razors to dish out a brutal recipe of justice with the help of the infatuated and enterprising meat pie maker Nellie Lovett.
Christine will direct a stellar cast, including Kevin Reade and Sarah Brennan in the iconic roles of the tormented and vengeful barber - Sweeney Todd, and the entrepreneurial and amoral meat pie shop owner - Mrs. Lovett. They will be joined by David Doyle as Anthony - a naive young sailor - and Kevina Hayes as Johanna – Todd's long-lost daughter and Anthony’s love interest.
Ciarán Dunphy plays the flamboyant Italian rival barber Adolfo Pirelli, with Adam O’Brien as Tobias Ragg - Pirelli’s downtrodden apprentice. The lecherous Judge Turpin will be played by Fergal Millar, while Alan Grant will play Beadle Bamford - a pompous public official who is deeply loyal to the corrupt Turpin. Delia Larkin will play The Beggar Woman - a deranged and schizophrenic woman who harbours a dark, surprising secret, while Brendan Corcoran will play Jonas Fogg, owner of the insane asylum.
This magnificent cast will be supported by a 12 piece orchestra, a chorus of nearly 50, and the usual high standard production values associated with Kilkenny Musical Society performances.
Christine will be joined on the creative team by renowned musical director David Wray in his first show with the society. This production will also feature scenic design by John O’Donoghue and lighting design by Gerry Taylor.
Kilkenny Musical Society’s highly anticipated 2015 production of the classic Stephen Sondheim musical masterpiece “Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” will be performed from the 12th to 18th of April 2015 at 8pm nightly in the Watergate Theatre, Kilkenny.
Prices are €15 from Sunday to Tuesday and €20 from Thursday to Saturday. The Society is also offering Group discounts for 10 or more at €15 per ticket.
